So many characters died during the Season 3 finale of HBO‘s House of the Dragon, you’d be forgiven for wondering if you’d just watched the series finale. In all actuality, there is still one season left before the dragons fly off into the sunset once and for all.
House of the Dragon is based on the novel Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, creator of the Game of Thrones universe. Notably, the TV series frequently diverts from the book, so showrunner Ryan Condal and his team could decide to end their version in an entirely different place.

THE TEASE
“There’s definitely no winner at the end of Season 3. It’s just death and destruction,” director-producer Andrij Parekh said in HBO’s post-show documentary that immediately followed the finale.
Condal added, “We’re entering into the end of days phase of the Dance of the Dragons [the Targaryen civil war]. Armies really don’t matter anymore. What’s going to matter coming into this end game is who’s got a dragon and which dragon is on which side and fighting for whom.”
Season 3 ended with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) finding an embroidery made by the recently deceased Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban), a dreamer, which seemed to depict Rhaenyra as the true leader of the Seven Kingdoms. “Rhaenyra begins the season doubtful of her rightness,” D’Arcy explained. “But I think by the end of Episode 8, she is resolute in her wrongness.”
Condal teased, “It’s a magic going out of the world when a Targaryen dreamer dies. As rare as the dragons are, the dreamers are even rarer. Now, to know that we are going forward without one of these in the line spells a certain darkness for the days to come for the Targaryen dynasty.”
The showrunner noted, “This is a giant crucible and everybody comes out the end of it wisened a little bit harder, more corrupted. We just love where we leave off at the end of the season. Even though it’s another bit of a cliffhanger, so to speak, it’s a hook for the next season.”
THE STATUS
In June 2026, while promoting the launch of Season 3, Condal confirmed that the Season 4 writers’ room was already open. “We’re actively writing,” he said. “We actually are starting to turn drafts over to HBO. This is early, we will keep iterating. I don’t put the script down until they actually take it away from me in production.”
The Emmy-nominated producer continued, “We’re as far ahead as we’ve ever been at this point in crafting a new season, while we’re still [delivering post-production on] the old one. That goes to show the machine is up and running and on its feet. But it’s also the fourth season — the end — the final act — in a story we’ve been waiting to tell for many years. We’re all really excited about doing it.”
HOW LONG IS THE WAIT?
Don’t expect to see Season 4 on your TV screens until the summer of 2028, at the minimum. HotD has been on a biennial release schedule since Season 1 debuted in August 2022, with Season 2 bowing in June 2024, followed by Season 3 in June 2026.
Patience is a virtue that TV fans in the streaming era have had to accept. Because of increasingly long production times — especially for visual-effects-driven shows like House of the Dragon or Stranger Things — there are often multiple years between cycles, and Season 3 of HotD ended on Aug. 9, 2026.
Condal understands viewers’ “frustration” at having to wait: “It takes a long time to make the show. Prep and shooting of the show — and this is after scripts are written — take a year, and then it takes seven-eight months to make dragons. So, do the math. It’s not possible to come out every year. I’m very sorry, but you guys decided to be fans of the show called House of the Dragon.“
WHO DIED IN SEASON 3?
In the third-season finale, the Battle of Tumbleton saw hundreds of soldiers and civilians — including children — die as Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and his men attacked Ormund Hightower (James Norton) inside the town walls in an effort to get to Prince Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth).
While Daemon and Daeron survived the battle, Ormund burned to death by Ulf White’s (Tom Bennett) dragon, as did Daemon’s close ally Roderick Dustin (Tommy Flanagan) and many of his Winter Wolves. Kat (Ellora Torchia), the wife of Hugh Hammer, was one of the civilians who passed away.
Helaena experienced a quieter death in the same episode. The pregnant princess jumped out of her window to avoid spending another day as Rhaenyra’s prisoner, her half-sister and queen. It’s unclear what will happen to Helaena’s dragon Dreamfyre.
Earlier in Season 3, Prince Jace (Harry Collett) was killed in the Battle of the Gullet, Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale) was slain by Aemond at Harrenhal, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) was beheaded by Rhaenyra upon her ascent to the throne, and Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) died in battle.
WHO’S BACK IN SEASON 4?
Despite all those aforementioned deaths, there are plenty of characters (and cast members) expected to return in the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon. Here’s a rundown of who’s still alive:
