I choreograph because it is the only language in which I feel completely uninhibited. I have been fortunate to learn to speak four languages over the course of my life, yet words remain fragile. They can be misinterpreted or fail to capture the depth of what we truly mean. Movement, however, transcends the invisible barriers that divide us—culture, borders, language, religion—and speaks directly to something instinctive.

I have been speaking the language of choreography since the age of 11. It has become my most honest form of expression. Through movement I can tell stories that are complex or even contradictory. It allows me to give form to the intangible, to use visual poetry to communicate­ an emotion in its purest state.

Dance is not only an art form but a bridge between people, as well as a bridge between the inner and outer worlds. I have witnessed how a gesture can resonate with audience members regardless of where they come from. A shared experience in a theater can dissolve the distance between us.

And perhaps that is why I choreograph and will continue to choreograph—because it compels me to research, to question, to connect, and then ultimately to reveal truths that are deeply personal and yet universally human. Sometimes it just takes a movement to blur our differences and to make the invisible visible.
