House music, including its various subgenres, is still oddly self-referential even as the sound has gone global. Few artists really get under the hood and tinker with the mechanics in the way that ZAINAB does with this debut EP. The Pakistan-born and raised but New York-based producer puts real lived experience of South Asian and Arab music into seven tracks packed with motifs that are both familiar (energetic tumbi lines, earth-wobbling bass, pitch-bent bamboo flutes) and unfamiliar (Urdu vocals, samples of Libyan-Egyptian singer-songwriter Hamid Al Shaeri). The results feel authentic to both cultures, from carnival-esque stomper ‘Banglahore’ with British-Bengali rapper Surya Sen to elated house banger ‘Her Eyes’ via syncopated club weapon ‘Delhi Gate’. Seamless fusion, immaculate vibes.
