No—not today. Google Stadia shut down on January 18, 2023, so Stadia Pro no longer exists as a subscription and cannot be purchased. Historically, the $9.99-per-month service could make sense for a narrow group of players, but its included games were subscription benefits rather than permanent ownership—and the platform’s eventual closure proved that cloud-gaming longevity was a real part of the value calculation.

What Stadia Pro was

Stadia Pro was the paid tier of Google’s Stadia cloud-gaming service. It was not an all-you-can-play catalog comparable to a modern library subscription. Most Stadia games still had to be purchased separately.

In its 2019-era form, Pro cost $9.99 per month, or $119.88 per year before tax. It offered three main benefits:

• Approximately one included game per month, “give or take,” selected by Google.
• Discounts on selected game purchases.
• A higher streaming-quality ceiling of up to 4K HDR with 5.1 surround sound, subject to the game, hardware and connection.

The original 2019 description and pricing are documented by SlashGear’s contemporary coverage. Calling the games “free” is potentially misleading: they were included subscription entitlements, not ordinary purchases that you permanently owned.

How the included games worked

Subscribers could claim the games Google made available through Pro. They could not choose any title from the Stadia store. The monthly cadence was approximate rather than a strict promise that a new game would arrive every month.

Once claimed, a Pro game remained associated with the account, but access depended on an active Pro subscription. Canceling Pro removed access to those claimed games. Resubscribing could restore access to eligible claims. Google’s historical promotional terms describe this distinction between subscription claims and separately purchased games.

That meant Stadia Pro was closer to a premium tier with periodic benefits than to a complete game library. A game bought separately was treated differently from a game claimed through Pro.

At launch, Stadia Base was not immediately available; the initial rollout required Pro or a Founder’s Edition route. The free tier was planned for later.

Was $9.99 a good deal?

The right calculation was not “Did Google give me a game with a $50 or $60 list price?” It was:

Did I want the included game, would I otherwise have bought it, and did I use the other Pro benefits?

At the historical price, the annual cost was $119.88 before tax. Pro could be reasonable if a subscriber enjoyed several of Google’s selections, used the discounts on games they already intended to buy, and valued instant streaming enough to avoid buying a console or gaming PC.

It was much less compelling for someone who disliked the monthly selections, already owned suitable hardware, or expected Pro to unlock the entire Stadia catalog. A nominal retail price has little value if the subscriber would never have purchased or played the game.

When 4K streaming helped—and when it did not

The 4K HDR and 5.1 claims were maximum service targets, not a guarantee that every title rendered natively at 4K in every situation. The benefit mattered most to someone with:

• A 4K television or monitor.
• Compatible audio equipment.
• Reliable broadband without an onerous data cap.
• A screen size and viewing distance where higher resolution was noticeable.

It mattered less to a 1080p-display owner, someone playing on a small screen, or anyone whose connection fluctuated. Cloud gaming also depended on the route between the player and Google’s servers, so image quality and responsiveness could vary even when the local device was powerful enough.

The risk Stadia Pro could not eliminate

Stadia’s convenience came with a trade-off: the games were tied to Google’s platform. A purchase was not an ordinary downloadable PC copy that could be preserved independently of Stadia. Access depended on Google’s servers, account systems, licensing arrangements and ongoing service availability. Cross-progression also depended on individual publishers and was not universal.

That risk was theoretical when the original question was published on July 19, 2019. It was not theoretical after Google announced the consumer shutdown on September 29, 2022, saying Stadia had not gained the user traction it expected. Google ultimately turned off Stadia’s servers on January 18, 2023. Its shutdown FAQ records the closure and refund policy.

What happened to Stadia?

• July 19, 2019: The original “Is Stadia Pro worth it?” article was published.
• November 2019: Stadia launched, with Pro serving as the initial access route for Founders Edition customers.
• January 2021: Google announced it would stop investing in first-party Stadia game development and focus on the underlying platform and industry partners. See Google’s announcement.
• September 29, 2022: Google announced the consumer shutdown.
• January 18, 2023: Stadia servers were shut down and the consumer service ended.

Google said eligible Stadia hardware and Stadia Store game and add-on purchases would be refunded. Stadia Pro fees were handled separately: Pro subscriptions were generally not refundable, apart from eligible charges incurred on or after September 29, 2022. The official availability notice confirms that the Stadia app, website and games became unavailable after shutdown.

The Stadia Controller was not automatically worthless: Google documented USB use and a Bluetooth conversion process. However, the Bluetooth-tool deadline was December 31, 2024, and post-shutdown support was unavailable. Details are in Google’s controller guidance.

Who would have benefited from Stadia Pro?

Historically, Pro was a reasonable choice for a player who wanted several of the included games, had dependable broadband, owned a 4K HDR display, valued instant access, and accepted that purchases were locked to Stadia’s ecosystem.

It was a poor fit for someone who wanted permanent ownership, a full catalog subscription, local downloads, or dependable access without an internet connection. It was also a weak proposition for a 1080p player who did not care about the included games or discounts.

What should readers use instead?

There is no exact modern replacement for Stadia’s combination of instant cloud delivery, individually purchased games and a Pro tier. The appropriate alternative depends on what mattered most:

• Catalog subscription: Services such as Xbox Game Pass are relevant if the priority is access to a broad subscription library. Plans, cloud access, catalogs and regional availability vary.
• Cloud PC gaming: GeForce NOW is aimed at people who already own compatible PC games elsewhere and want to stream them. It is not the same as receiving a new game store with a subscription.
• Cloud-gaming service: Amazon Luna is a comparable delivery model, but channels, memberships and availability vary by country.
• Console subscription: PlayStation Plus may suit readers already invested in PlayStation hardware; tier and regional support determine its catalog and streaming benefits.
• Local ownership: Steam is a better fit for readers who prioritize downloadable PC games and platform continuity over cloud-only convenience.

Before subscribing to any service, check its current plan terms, game-entitlement rules, supported devices, region and cancellation policy. The key lesson from Stadia is not simply to count included games: examine portability, ownership and the provider’s long-term platform commitment.

Bottom line

In 2019, Stadia Pro could be worthwhile for a narrow audience: players who wanted Google’s selected games, could use the premium streaming features and accepted the risks of a cloud-only platform. It was never a straightforward “one free game every month” deal, because the games were conditional subscription benefits and the catalog was not fully included.

In 2026, the answer is definitive: Stadia Pro is not worth buying because it is no longer available. Google ended Stadia on January 18, 2023, and any current recommendation to subscribe would be obsolete.
