MECANOO’S MUSEUM RETURNS IN NEW PHOTOGRAPHS
Along Saadiyat Island waterfront, the pale concrete walls of Mecanoo‘s Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi irregularly step upward behind planted terraces. From a distance, the upper volumes compress into a rocky skyline. At walking height, the mass breaks apart around shaded openings and broad paved routes. With this geologically-inspired entrance, visitors are drawn through the building before they reach the museum doors.
The 35,000-square-meter museum opened to the public in the UAE in November 2025, when its world-first dinosaur displays drew the first wave of attention. Newly released photographs by Ossip Architectuurfotografie and Deed Studio now turn the lens toward the completed architecture and interiors, moving from the layered exterior into its monumental lobby, then onward through the galleries.
These new images give the clearest view yet of how Mecanoo’s landscape concept works at human scale across the largest natural history museum in the Middle East.

A GEOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE AT SAADIYAT
The team at Mecanoo developed the building from the meeting of water and earth, looking to regional wadis and eroded geological formations for a form that behaves as terrain. Volumes rise at different heights and pull apart around passageways, while pentagonal geometry derived from cellular structures repeats across the facade and surrounding landscape. The pattern continues underfoot, binding paving lines to the vertical joints of the pale exterior panels.
Across the 82,000-square-meter site, three public pathways connect the waterfront with neighboring cultural institutions and remain open without a museum ticket. The routes slip beneath broad overhangs before widening into planted terraces, giving the museum several points of entry and extending its public space through the building’s edges. This circulation keeps the architecture porous at ground level even as the upper volumes retain their dense, rock-like presence.

DAYLIGHT ENTERS A CARVED INTERIOR
Inside the completed building, the entrance lobby appears cut from the dense exterior mass, with textured walls rising around a vast central void. Deep skylights draw daylight down through the roof, creating bright shafts across the surfaces below and giving the museum’s largest specimens enough space to register against the architecture. The transition preserves a connection to the sunlit exterior while shifting visitors into the darker atmosphere required by the collections.
Beyond the lobby, the galleries gather around a central courtyard that keeps the museum’s vast timeline legible without fixing every visitor to the same route. A chronological sequence traces the natural world from the origins of the universe toward the planet’s present challenges, while openings around the courtyard allow visitors to shift between galleries according to their own curiosity.

THICK WALLS RESPOND TO ABU DHABI’S HEAT
The exterior’s visual weight also serves Abu Dhabi’s climate, as thick building masses and controlled openings limit solar heat gain while shaded outdoor areas protect the approach. Concrete and steel form the primary structure, while locally manufactured ultra-high-performance concrete panels wrap much of the facade and reduce transport distances. Interior planters create another thermal buffer, and water-efficient irrigation supports planting adapted to the local climate.
Seen through this new photographic survey, the museum reads as connected ground within Saadiyat Cultural District, with public routes linking its waterfront setting to the institutions nearby. Within a district often read through distant silhouettes, Mecanoo pulls attention back to walking height and the physical act of moving through shade.
