Music videos now live most of their lives on small digital screens. But artistically speaking, they seem to keep getting bigger, grander, more ambitious—short-form musicals in pop packaging. So maybe it’s unsurprising that this year, most of the MTV Video Music Awards nominees for Best Choreography are collaborative teams. It takes a lot of dance firepower to support such sweeping creative visions.

We’ll find out which of them will take home the Moon Person trophy on Sunday, September 27, when the VMAs will be held at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. The ceremony, which begins at 4:30 pm PDT/7:30 pm EDT, will be simulcast on CBS and MTV, and streamed live on Paramount+.

Opening the show is none other than Madonna, in her first VMAs performance since 2003. The dance artists behind her “Confessions II: The Film” are nominated for their choreo—will they reunite to transform the VMAs stage into “Danceteria”?
