MasterChef Season 16 Episode 12 recap: Global Feed

Tonight’s episode of MasterChef asks the Top 11 to go viral. Celebrity chef, social media icon, and past MasterChef contestant Nick DiGiovanni drops in for a Mystery Box challenge built for the feed, where the home cooks must turn their cultural roots into the next big food sensation. A collaboration with Nick goes to the winner. Someone else goes home just shy of the Top 10. Judges Gordon Ramsay, Tiffany Derry, and Joe Bastianich are on hand to taste the results.

The Challenge

Another Mystery Box is waiting in the MasterChef kitchen, and Gordon, Tiffany, and Joe promise this one will get everyone talking. But first, a rule change: starting tonight, there is no more immunity pin. The best dish no longer buys safety next week — only tonight, and only for the winner’s entire team.

Under the boxes? Phones and tablets. In today’s world, the judges say, the phone eats first. The home cooks are cooking dishes inspired by their culture, made for social media.

Nick FaceTimes in, then surprises everyone by walking through the doors. His recipe for going viral: visuals that stop people, flavors that make it worth staying, and something accessible enough that a viewer at home thinks they could pull it off. The challenge is figuring out how their culture hooks the social media generation.

One hour on the clock.

Top Dishes

Jaime (Asia-Pacific)

Gordon: “The combination of the flavors tastes delicious.”

Joe: “A nice dessert. Really good.”
Nick: “Visually, it definitely has that wow factor.”

Julia (Europe)
Dish: Mount Etna Raviolo — Squid Ink Pasta with Ricotta & Egg Yolk and Breadcrumb Charcoal Ash
Gordon: “You’re cooking like a pro and shining like a star.”
Tiffany: “I love the note of anchovy.”
Joe: “You come up with great ideas…and you make delicious food.”
Nick: “I was skeptical about this dish — it delivered.”

Dave (Africa)
Dish: Seffa Medfouna — Shredded Savory Chicken with Sweetened Steamed Vermicelli Noodles
Gordon: “The fragrance coming off that chicken is incredible.”
Tiffany: “This is something I’ve never seen before. That gets me excited.”
Joe: “There is something to be said about going viral with deep-steeped traditions that are authentic… which is what this is.”
Nick: “This makes me want to go to Morocco. It’s a beautiful dish.

Jake (Americas)
Dish: Horchata Creme Brûlée with Churro Bowl
Gordon: “It’s exceptional.”
Tiffany: “Love that classic churro texture. This is really delicious.”
Joe: “It looks like something you would go into a bakery and buy. Professional.”
Nick: “It’s delicious. The flavor gets me just as excited as the visual.”

Winner

The winner of this challenge is Julia. She has won the social media collaboration with Nick and kept all of Team Europe safe tonight.

Bottom Dishes

Foo (Asia Pacific)
Dish: Vietnemese Sizzling Crepe Taco with Marinated Shrimp & Pork, Mexican Spices, and Vietnemese Herbs
Gordon: “It’s more confused than viral.”
Tiffany: “It’s put together in a way that’s difficult to eat.”
Joe: “You’re throwing everything but the kitchen sink in here. Sometimes these dishes need to be more focused.”
Nick: “Without having tasted it, I can tell you it doesn’t have that viral factor to it.”

Peter (Africa)
Dish: Plantain Funnel Cake with Flambeed Plantains, Puff Puff Coconut, Chantilly Cream, and Strawberry Coulis
Gordon: “Smart idea, but it does not look attractive.”
Tiffany: “I wish you would have just lit that sucker on fire for us.”
Joe: “It’s a little bit greasy.”
Nick: “I like the funnel cake, but highlight the plantains.”

Maria (Americas)
Dish: Baby Octopus Rice with Bell Peppers, Onions, and Garlic
Gordon: “Sadly, this octopus is so overcooked, but the rice is delicious.”
Tiffany: “I just wish you would have done more. It feels a bit lackluster.”
Joe: “The rice component has nothing to do with the seafood component.”
Nick: “It looks like a dish I would want for dinner, but it misses wow factor.”

Elimination

The judges decided to eliminate Maria from the competition.

“I’m feeling said I’m going home,” Maria says. “But at the same time, I’m just beyond proud of everything I’ve accomplished here on MasterChef. I’m so proud to have represented Brazil.”

Next Time

The Top 10 kicks off with a MasterChef classic: the tag team. The home cooks will be cooking dishes based on the judges’ fondest food memories. But there’s a twist: they’ll choose their own partner — and it’s a double elimination.
