Ju-On: The Grudge 4K Re-Release Trailer

“Once you see it, you won’t forget…” Arrow Video posted a new 4K re-release trailer for the J-horror classic Ju-On: The Grudge, the original film that kicked off this mega horror franchise. Made by horror maestro Takashi Shimizu, this first Ju-On: The Grudge Japanese ghost film first debuted in 2002 at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival – it didn’t even open in Japan until early 2003. A mysterious & vengeful spirit marks and pursues anybody who dares enter the house in which it resides. Shimizu made one sequel after this one, then made the US remake The Grudge in 2004, which launched the franchise now at 13 films. Arrow Video is “proud to present a 4K restoration of the film that revitalised the Japanese horror boom of the turn of the millennium. Shimizu’s disconcerting approach to plotting, unnerving eye for the uncanny details in the dark corners of the frame and an innate talent for effective jump scares so impressed Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, that he invited the director to helm two Hollywood remakes.” Ju-On stars Megumi Okina, Misa Uehara, Misaki Ito, and Yui Ichikawa. This is still as scary as ever! Even moreso in pristine 4K quality.

“Ju-On”: the name given to a deadly curse spawned when someone dies in the grip of a violent rage. All who come into contact with it are doomed… Deep in the shadows of the attic of an ordinary family home in the Tokyo suburbs, something malevolent is stirring. When social worker Rika (Megumi Okina) is sent to check on a traumatised old lady whose family have moved in at the site of the notorious Saeki family murder case, she unwittingly unleashes a cycle of terror that is transmitted via its victims further and further from its original source. Ju-On: The Grudge, also known as 呪怨 in Japanese, is both written and directed by prolific Japanese genre filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, after making Tomie: Re-birth (2001) and before continuing with Ju-on: The Grudge 2 (2003) and US remake The Grudge (2004). Produced by Taka Ichise. Made by Pioneer LDC, Nikkatsu, Oz Co., Xanadeux. The film first premiered at the 2002 Screamfest Horror Film Festival, then opened in Japan in 2003 and in US theaters in 2004. Arrow Video is re-releasing Shimizu’s original Ju-On: The Grudge on 4K Blu-ray – it’s available to order here. Any big fans of this one?
