Five unexpected stars of DWWA 2026: Regions and grapes to watch


With nearly 17,000 wines judged blind from 58 countries, Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is, on one level, a roll-call of the usual greats. France, Italy and Spain dominate the medal charts every year and 2026 was no exception.

But the real thrill of the world’s largest wine competition lies in its margins: the grape you can’t pronounce, the region you couldn’t place on a map, the style nobody expected to triumph.
