The 49ers will hold their first training camp practice on Sunday, but head coach Kyle Shanahan will not be running things. The team announced Shanahan is recovering from “non-life-threatening injuries” he suffered in a car crash last week. Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster and team coordinators will handle HC responsibilities until Shanahan is ready to return to his full-time post.
“Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers,” the 49ers stated.
Shanahan suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose and a broken hand, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. He required more than 40 stitches in his face after his car collided with an SUV near his home in northern California, according to Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner of ESPN. The other driver was not injured, and drugs and alcohol were not involved, per Schefter and Wagoner.
Now in his 10th year as the 49ers’ head coach, Shanahan has guided the club to an 82-67 regular-season record, five playoff berths, three NFC West titles and two conference championships. The 49ers overcame a rash of injuries last year to go 12-5 in the regular season and earn a playoff spot. They went on the road to beat the Eagles in the wild-card round, 23-19, but were on the negative end of a 41-6 rout against the Seahawks in the divisional round.
Foerster has been on Shanahan’s staff since 2019, when he began as a game-planning assistant. Shanahan elevated Foerster to O-line coach in 2021 and added assistant HC duties to his responsibilities in 2025. The 64-year-old will take on a bigger role while Shanahan recovers, as will new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and OC Klay Kubiak. Morris, who replaced the departed Robert Saleh, spent the previous two years as the Falcons’ head coach.
