Yesterday, Von Miller‘s desire to play for the Cowboys was realized with a one-year deal being arranged. That pact is now official, as the future Hall of Famer is set to play for a fifth career team.
Miller publicly expressed interest in returning to the Broncos and Bills, two of his former employers. Roughly one month ago, he then made clear his hope to spend 2026 in Dallas. At the time, nothing was imminent. Interest was shown on the part of the team well before this past weekend, however.
During an appearance on the Night Cap podcast, Miller said (h/t Jon Machota of The Athletic) the Cowboys reached out to him one week prior to the start of training camp. They were the first team to do so, something which no doubt made an agreement easier to work out in this case. Miller will spend the final portion of training camp preparing for his 15th season and 16th year in the NFL.
“It just seemed right for me,” Miller said when explaining his decision. “I live here in the offseason. My mom and dad and my kids are here. I always had a little blue on my heart since I was a little boy. I always paid attention to the Dallas Cowboys.”
Miller signed for $6.1MM on a one-year Commanders deal last offseason. While the two-time Super Bowl champion came to regret not joining the Seahawks, his Washington contract proved to be worthwhile based on his nine-sack performance. The Cowboys will be looking for similar production on a comparable accord. Miller landed $5.5MM in base value from Dallas, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Incentives could see the deal max out at $7.5MM.
Dallas’ pass rush group saw the addition of Rashan Gary via trade and of Malachi Lawrence during the opening round of the draft. 2025 second-rounder Donovan Ezeiruaku is in line for a notable role, and Sam Williams represents another returnee. Improved production along the edge will be one of many goals for new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and Co. in 2026, and Miller will aim to contribute in that regard.
The 37-year-old managed a team-leading sack total in Washington despite only logging a 37% snap share. A similar workload could be in store with the Cowboys in 2026; it will be interesting to see if another strong campaign will be in store for Miller as he joins his hometown team.
