The Packers’ offensive line received plenty of criticism for its Week 1 performance. The unit has a new arrival in place prior to Green Bay’s next game.
Guard Cordell Volson has been signed, per a team announcement. Volson has joined the Packers’ practice squad, making him a candidate for a gameday elevation as early as Sunday. The 28-year-old has managed to line up a new deal not long after being released by the Titans during roster cuts. This news comes one day after a Packers visit took place (h/t Jason Wilde of WISC-TV3).
A fourth-round pick of the Bengals in 2022, Volson has made 53 combined regular and postseason appearances to date in his career. Each of them have come with Cincinnati, although earlier this offseason it appeared as though a starting spot in Tennessee could be in store. Instead, Volson was among the final players cut prior to the start of the campaign. The North Dakota State product recently worked out for the Cowboys, but that did not produce a deal.
In the aftermath of a Week 1 loss in which quarterback Jordan Love was under frequent pressure (to say the least), offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich noted (via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman) Green Bay would rotate a few offensive linemen during practice. Jager Burton handled most of the starting left guard reps during training camp, but it was Donovan Jennings who handled that spot against the Vikings. Stenavich also indicated Anthony Belton working at guard once again (as opposed to right tackle) could be in store moving forward. How things are handled with those players will be worth watching closely.
Volson will offer depth and experience along the interior as he looks to resume his career. After spending all of 2025 sidelined due to injury, it will be interesting to see if he manages to carve out at least a backup guard gig with the Packers.
