Manuel Cervantes Home Lists for $6.9 Million in San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is celebrated for its thriving arts and culinary scenes, as well as Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the neo-Gothic church that soars above the historic city’s central plaza. The central Mexico city, in the state of Guanajuato, should also be lauded for its contemporary residences.

One such home is in the tranquil Ojo de Agua neighborhood, in the hills that rise above the central part of the city. Cajas de Luz is the work of renowned Mexican architect Manuel Cervantes, who collaborated with the landscape designer Hugo Sánchez and the interior firm Habitacion116. The remarkable result of the collaboration is an open-air residence crafted from natural and reclaimed materials, where the boundary between inside and outside is completely blurred.

The angular structure, which encompasses more than 11,500 square feet, is composed of board-formed concrete, steel, glass, and natural stone. The interiors feature Borneo ironwood, valued for its resistance to termites, rot, and fungi, with about 90 percent of the wood being reclaimed. It creates a warmth that spreads throughout the home, from the living room with its floating fireplace to the kitchen with its soaring ceilings and open shelving.

In some rooms, lush greenery wraps around the perimeter, adding vibrant color to the otherwise muted palette, and, in others, like the office and primary bathroom, water features and pools flow through the rooms, imbuing them with a sense of serenity. The primary suite also includes a massive dressing room and a private terrace that looks out on the city below.

The partially sheltered heated pool extends outward between two cubic volumes, hovering over the landscape. A separate guest house rounds out the property, resulting in a total of four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. The $6.9 million abode is listed by its original owners for the first time, with Nancy Almodovar of Nan & Company Properties representing it in the U.S. market and Ann Dolan of CDR San Miguel representing it locally.

Cervantes recently debuted his first residential project in California, only his second in the United States. The Montecito residence is listed for $18 million after first hitting the market in February for a hair under $20 million.
